The inhabitants of Nantes Métropole collectively make 2 million journeys per day. Knowing that transport generates 29% of the metropolitan area's greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions and that in parallel, the Sustainable Energy Action Plan aims at a 30% decrease in GHG emissions per inhabitant by 2020 with respect to 2003, mobility in the conurbation is a key issue.
Hence, Nantes Métropole has defined ambitious goals for transport in successive urban mobility plans. They aim to have a 12% modal share of cycling by 2030 and to reach this ambitious target they have launched a cycling plan, which includes the following measures:
- Reinforced and safer bike parking solutions in public space and in parking lots
- Development of 2 major cycling axes crossing the conurbation (East West and North South)
- Development of cycling facilities to encourage safer and well-connected cycling trips
- Innovative developments (specific road marking in roundabouts, etc.)
- Development of bike rental services (short, medium and long-term), subsidies for the purchase of cargo bikes and electric bikes, etc.
- Communication and awareness raising campaigns
In recognition of its efforts in the field of sustainable mobility and especially cycling, Nantes has been selected to host the Velocity 2015 international conference.
At the local level, 2015 will be an opportunity to put the spotlight on cycling and boost behavioural change through two mechanisms:
- Shifting the image of cycling by including it in all public policies
- Bringing people together around the key topic of cycling
