Cycling in summer is great, with a bright sun on your skin and a refreshing breeze in your hair – everyone knows that. What less people know is that, actually, cycling is just great in winter too. It’s counterintuitive, but again, most great truths are.
This is why in 2013, February 12th has been declared Winter Bike to Work Day: to spread this great knowledge on the pleasures of daily winter ridings. The initiative invites cyclists throughout the Northern Hemisphere to commute on bicycles that day, and share their stories online. Last year’s edition brought together more than 10,000 people worldwide – we hope this year's has been even more successful.
Great champion of the initiative is the Croatian Cyclists’ Union, which efficiently pushed Zagreb’s workers to cycle to work even in winter. "Last year the city of Zagreb was the first in this global initiative, so we decided to work on promotion even more this year. Moreover, this is opportunity for us to prepare for the first national bike2work campaign in Croatia, which is going to start in May 2016” said Marko Stanec from Cyclists’ Union.
The promotional campaign was organised in partnership with the cyclist friendly company Dukat, that provided cool presents for every participant; and with the local bike sharing system Nextbike, that granted those who registered in February 60 minutes of cycling for free! On its behalf, the Cyclists’ Union coordinated the organisation, and promoted the event even more by offering free breakfast to all the participants.
Activities in this small promotional campaign in Zagreb end with the Winter critical mass. The aim is to send out a message to the local communal services across Croatia: snow should be removed from bike infrastructure, and people should cycle more, even in winter. As once a wise man said: "There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing”.
