Bike to Work -campaign ends – Participants cycled 9.5 million km in May
72,000 participants have reached the finish line in this year's Bike to Work competition. Together they have accomplished great things on the bikes: They have burned calories, equivalent to 0.5 million cream cakes, cycled 237 times around the earth and saved the climate for 142 tons of CO2!
Throughout the month of May, over 7,000 teams with a total of approximately 72,000 participants have occupied Denmark’s bicycle paths. That's 1,000 participants more than last year - and together they have cycled 9.5 million kilometers. This pays off both for the individual participant, the workplace and the society.
"The participants can be proud of themselves - and everyone else also has reason to rejoice. This year we have calculated the effect of the campaign on both sick days, travel expenses, calories and CO2 - and it is impressive what many small, personal efforts sums up to, "says campaign manager Maria Bech.
The participants save money, the environment and their health
Belts has probably been tightened in a few holes on part of the participants during the campaign. On the many bike trips, they have burned about 220 million. kcal. This corresponds to 0.5 million. cream cakes or 800,000 Bounty bars.
The directors of the companies that are part of the campaign also have reason to be happy: The participants have exercised so much that they have reduced altogether 12,600 sick days. This corresponds to a saving of a total of 25 million dollars for the companies.
The climate has also been spared 142.3 tons of CO2. This corresponds to the weight of 28.5 elephants - or the amount of CO2 that escapes when producing 142,000 liters of beer, or almost 1,000 smartphones.
Now that's what we call a win-win -situation!
