Milan, September 2016 - "I go to work by bike, too!”
A smiling Vincenzo Nibali
invites everybody to use a bike for traveling to and from work to support the FIAB-Federation of Bicycle Friends
, ECF Italian member in celebration of the 3rd National BikeToWork Day on September 16th.
"I’m so enthusiastic about participating in the #BikeToWork program and I am happy to stand alongside FIAB
. I really hope to convince as many people as possible to try, at least once, to go to work by bike
. You’d see that, even for short commutes, the bike is just as pleasant, fast and sustainable
as it is when used for sports and pleasure,” says world-renowned cyclist Vincenzo Nibali
"We are proud to be collaborating with a great champion like Vincenzo Nibali for something so important for both our cities and our health – adds Giulietta Pagliaccio, president of FIAB – Changing people’s cultural imprinting on using a bike in the daily commute is a big challenge, but it brings with it huge benefits such as reduced traffic, improved air quality, increased physical and mental well-being and, as a result, savings for the whole community. It’s a goal that we want to reach with the support of those who use a bike for really big challenges, like Vincenzo who has generously accepted to be the spokesperson of our message in such a forceful and captivating way."
There’s a host of FIAB initiatives to encourage people to use the bike on a daily basis: National BikeToWork Day
, promoted during the European Mobility Week of September 16 to 22
, involves many cities where hundreds of associations and thousands of citizens are expected to participate (see all the events at www.settimanaeuropeafiab.it
On the Europe side, there’s the Bike Challenge project brought to Italy by FIAB
: a fun and free competition which targets companies, their employees and collaborators who, until October 31st
, can compete for prizes by putting as many colleagues as possible "in the pedals”. Last year - the first year of the Bike Challenge in Italy which took place solely in and around Milan - over 92 companies
and more than 2,000 people
got involved, for a total of 300,000 km
covered on bicycle between home and work in the space of a month and a half (for registration and more info www.biketowork.it)
Last but not least, bicycle safety is always at the heart of FIAB initiatives, like the historic battle actively promoted by the Federation which led the Italian Parliament to require INAIL (the Italian government agency for workplace injury insurance) to extend to/from work trips- coverage also to workers commuting by bike.
The FIAB campaign "I go to work by bike, too!" with Vincenzo Nibali will be marketed on the web and on the Federation’s social networks and used throughout Italy to support activities scheduled for the 3rd National BikeToWork Day.
