British employers are allowed to loan bicycles and cyclists' safety equipment to their employees as a tax-free benefit since 1999. The Cycle to Work Alliance reports that 550,000 employees already benefited from this scheme, saving 112,210 tonnes of CO2 per year. Public transport costs can be deducted through subsidies of local buses or through the provision of interest-free loans of up to £ 10,000 which can be used to buy season tickets for public transport. Company cars taxation has also been lately changed to promote more sustainable solutions, which lead to a decrease in company cars on the road.
ECF recommends the introduction of a mode-neutral reimbursement scheme for home-work commuting and of more fiscal incentives for public transport as well.
